A substantial history of Christianity by the influential German church historian Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1693-1755), whose Ecclesiastical History became one of the standard works on the subject throughout eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. Beginning with the early Christian Church, Mosheim traces its development through the Roman world and Middle Ages to the Reformation and the religious divisions of early modern Europe, considering ecclesiastical events alongside contemporary politics, philosophy and learning. Noted for attempting a more critical and historical approach to church history than many earlier confessional accounts, the work was widely read in Britain through Archibald Maclaine's English translation. Presented here complete in six volumes, this 1806 edition is particularly attractive in its uniform contemporary tree-calf bindings.

A very good (plus) full tree calf leather hardback, still retaining a nice polish to the front and rear covers. With gilt tooling to spine and red morocco title label. Boards with light shelf wear and spine lightly rubbed. An attractive, soundly bound set.

With some light spotting to endpapers and text block edges. Text is otherwise bright and clear. Dust toning to top edge.
