Charles Darwin; The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, John Murray, 1872, First edition, second issue
The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, by Charles Darwin, M.A., F.R.S., &c. With Photographic and Other Illustrations.
Published by John Murray, London, 1872. First edition, second issue - Publisher's advertisements dated to November 1872, on p.208 contains 'htat' misspelling on the first line.
A fair to good green cloth hardback with gilt title to spine, and blind embossed decoration to covers. With bumping and wear and mottled discoloration to covers. With black endpapers with intact hinges, but weakening. Title page present but partially detached, and split to gutters after the free endpapers at either end of the book.
Text is bright and clean throughout with slightly age toned margins, and occasional scattered small mark, and with illustrations and plates all very good. Some dust toning to top edge. Illustrations are of high quality. Faint previous owner's inscription to the first free endpaper and also inscribed on the final page of advertisements. With occasional uncut page at top edge, and some careless cutting to separate the Publisher's advertisements at the rear has resulted in a torn and ragged top edge to those pages.
Text in English.
vi + 374pp + VII Plates + 4pp Publisher's advertisements, with November 1872 date. With illustrations in the text and Heliotype photographic plates. Plates I and II are fold-outs. The original Plate opposite p. 264,(Plate VI) is missing and has been replaced with a loose plate carrying later tipped-on images of the photographs which would have been present originally.
