Fine Vintage Cambodian Silver Betel Box, Cat, 9.5cm long, 100g, exceptional detail.

A beautiful Cambodian silver betel box in the form of a regal cat adorned with a jeweled neck collar. Cats are said to bring prosperity, and a calico cat is part of the Cambodian King's coronation ceremony.

With intricate repousse detail. A very attractive box.

Markings: With inscription in Khmer script in a small panel on the underside (we cannot translate). No Western characters.

Age: c. early - mid 20th Century. Difficult to age exactly as this is such a long-standing traditional craft, but the fine detail, and inner tarnishing, suggests a date well before the era of tourism into Cambodia. More modern pieces tend to be much less refined.
