Helden Von Hellas den Griechischenn Sagen Nacherzahlt von Ernst Roenau, Mit 12 Faksimilebildern von W. Russel Flint, Vienna, 1925 numbered limited edition
A beautifully illustrated limited edition retelling of classical Greek myths, Helden von Hellas (Heroes of Hellas) presents Ernst Roenau’s evocative German prose alongside twelve exquisite tipped-in colour plates by renowned British illustrator William Russell Flint. First published in Vienna in 1925 by Arthur Wolf Verlag, this numbered edition (No. 1398 of 1500) is a fine example of early 20th-century Continental book artistry, blending classical subject matter with the emerging modernist aesthetic of the period.
This copy comes from the personal library of William St Clair (1937-2021), the distinguished British historian, author, and authority on the reception of classical antiquity. His pencilled signature and 2015 date are on a front endpaper, and his original 2015 purchase receipt from an Amsterdam bookseller is also included . A compelling association copy with scholarly provenance.
