This set consists of two volumes in matching bindings of Thomas Arnold's History of Rome. Vols I and III only. Volume II is missing. Comprising:

Vol. I: Early History to the Burning of Rome by The Gauls. Second edition, 1840; 

Vol III: From the End of the First to the End of the Second Punic War. Fourth edition, 1850. 

Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), headmaster of Rugby School and a noted historian and moralist, brought a scholarly and moral perspective to his classical histories. His approach combined narrative history with reflections on governance, civic duty, and character - values central to Victorian educational ideals.

A very good set of 2 hardback volumes, with leather spines and corners, and raised bands and tooled gilt decoration and titles. With marbled paper over boards. Some bumping and wear, with some scuffed losses to leather and wear to extremities, but a soundly bound set. Feathered marble endpapers (with a small area of paper transfer to Vol I - see photo), and previous owner's inscription to first free endpapers.

Text is bright and clean throughout with feathered marble edges to text block.
