Myths of the Norsemen from the Eddas and Sagas, H.A. Guerber, Harrap, 1909
H. A. Guerber's Myths of the Norsemen is a wide-ranging and highly readable account of Scandinavian mythology, drawing principally upon the Poetic and Prose Eddas and the Icelandic sagas. Guerber recounts the stories of Odin, Thor, Loki, Freya, Balder and the other gods and heroes of the Norse world, from the creation myths and the realm of Asgard through to Ragnarök and the destruction and renewal of the world. First published in 1908, the book became a popular English-language introduction to Norse mythology, enhanced by numerous full-page illustrations drawn from nineteenth-century interpretations of the legends. It explores the same Old Norse-Icelandic literary tradition that would become an important scholarly and imaginative influence upon J. R. R. Tolkien and other twentieth-century writers.
