A wonderful work by Alasdair Gray, probably the most important contributor to Scottish art and literature in modern times, who passed away on 29 December 2019. 

This copy is signed by the author to the first free blank endpaper and is numbered 273/500, and dated to '20.2.1989'.

Published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1989. First edition, first impression.

A fine example of this beautiful volume which is richly illustrated by Gray. Black cloth hardback with elaborate silver design to covers. With printed dustjacket - not price-clipped and now protected by clear, removable plastic. Text is bright and clean, with the final verse in the book being printed in colour. Fine condition throughout.

Includes the loosely inserted erratta 'letter' in Gray's facsimile handwriting. Some toning to folds.
