Pincher Martin by William Golding is one of the author’s most psychologically intense early novels, first published in 1956, two years after the success of Lord of the Flies. The story follows a naval officer struggling for survival after a wartime disaster at sea, unfolding as a stark and unsettling exploration of consciousness, identity and human endurance. Widely regarded as one of Golding's most powerful and intellectually challenging works, the novel combines physical survival narrative with deeper existential themes.
