A classic collection of literary travel essays by the Victorian scholar and critic John Addington Symonds, Sketches and Studies in Italy and Greece reflects the author's lifelong fascination with the art, history, and culture of the Mediterranean world. Combining personal observation with informed commentary on subjects ranging from Renaissance Italy and classical antiquity to architecture, painting, and literature, these essays helped shape English appreciation of southern Europe in the late nineteenth century. Offered here complete in three series, the set remains one of Symonds' most admired works and an engaging exploration of the places and traditions that inspired him.
