This attractive, compact, full calf leather volume contains Tobias Smollett's fourth novel, The Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves, first published serially in 1760-61 and in book form in 1762. One of Smollett's most overtly comic novels, it draws strongly upon the tradition of Cervantes' Don Quixote, following the eccentric Sir Launcelot as he travels through eighteenth-century England attempting to revive the ideals of medieval chivalry and right the wrongs he encounters. Through his adventures, Smollett combines satire, farce and social observation, directing his humour at contemporary manners, institutions and abuses of justice. This appealing 1783 edition comprises two volumes bound together in a single pocket-sized volume, each retaining its own engraved frontispiece.
