The Alteration by Kingsley Amis is a sharply imaginative alternative history novel, first published in 1976, set in a world where the Protestant Reformation never took place and the Roman Catholic Church remains the dominant power in Europe. Combining satire, speculative fiction and social commentary, the novel follows the young Hubert Anvil as he faces a life-altering decision within this vividly reimagined society. Widely regarded as one of Amis's most inventive later works, the book won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for science fiction in 1977.
