Frederic Prokosch's The Asiatics was his first novel and the work which established his literary reputation, presenting the episodic journey of a young American travelling across an exotic and often threatening Asia from the Middle East towards China. Blending adventure, travel narrative and dreamlike invention, Prokosch created an imagined Asia largely without having visited the places he described, yet the novel was widely admired for the richness and atmosphere of its landscapes. Published in 1935, it became an international success and was awarded the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse. This stated first edition has particularly appealing literary provenance, coming from the personal library of the novelist and noted book collector Hugh Walpole (1884-1941) at Brackenburn, his Lake District home, and bearing his distinctive gilt monogram bookplate.

The Asiatics, by Frederic Prokosch.
