Rupert T. Gould's The Case for the Sea-Serpent is a serious and remarkably detailed investigation into one of the most enduring mysteries of maritime folklore: the existence of unidentified large marine animals popularly described as sea-serpents. Drawing upon historical records, eyewitness testimony and reported encounters by sailors and naval officers, Gould examines the evidence case by case, attempting to distinguish credible observations from misidentification, exaggeration and legend. Published in 1930 following his successful Oddities and Enigmas, the book reflects Gould's characteristic combination of open-minded curiosity and methodical research, and remains an important early work in the literature of cryptozoology and the scientific investigation of unexplained animals.

A good blue cloth hardback with gilt title to spine. No dustjacket. Spine is a little sunned, and covers bumped and frayed to extremities. Front and rear pastedowns with map. The one at the rear showing signs of a label removal. Binding is sound.

Text is generally clean and bright throughout with some offset spotting to pages at extremties. Illustrated. The book includes one related loose newspaper clipping on the subject of the Loch Ness Monster (Yorkshire Post 1933).
