The China Journal, Collection of 6 Issues, 1928-1940, North China Daily News and Herald, Shanghai.
A small but attractive group of six issues of The China Journal, spanning the years 1928 to 1940, a period of significant political and social change in China. Published in Shanghai, the journal was one of the principal English-language periodicals of its kind, offering articles on Chinese culture, history, society, and current affairs for an international readership.
The present selection captures a cross-section of this transitional era, from the late 1920s through the wartime years, and reflects the journal’s role as an important contemporary record of Western engagement with China. Individually issued and increasingly scarce, such runs and groupings are now less commonly encountered on the market.
