The Comedy of the White Dog, signed by Alasdair Gray, Rare 1st edition.
The Comedy of the White Dog, signed by Alasdair Gray, Rare 1st edition.
Published in 1979 by The Print Studio Press at the Glasgow Print Studio, this was Gray's first published work. It is particularly scarce as there were only 600 copies printed originally and many of them were later destroyed by Gray himself, as he has stated. Alasdair Gray passed away on 29 December 2019.
The book contains 2 short stories - The Comedy of the White Dog and The Crank Who Made the Revolution.
Out of the 600 copies, 26 were signed and lettered A-Z, and this is one of the remainder. This copy was signed by Gray at a later date at the Edinburgh Book Festival.
4pp card wrap covers + 24pp text. Dimensions approximately 240mm x 185mm. Weight: approximately 90g.
Very good condition. Cover has a splash spot at the bottom centre and some age spotting and discoloration to top right front, and the rear. Minor bumping to bottom right corner. Text is lovely and clean. No owner's inscriptions.
A very scarce item indeed from probably the most important contributor to Scottish art and literature in modern times.
