First published in Germany as one of the nineteenth century's most influential architectural pattern books, The Gothic Model-Book was intended as a practical source of inspiration for architects, builders, craftsmen and designers engaged in the Gothic Revival. Compiled by the German architects Vincenz Statz and Georg Gottlob Ungewitter, the work presents hundreds of detailed studies of medieval architectural forms and decorative arts, drawn from churches and public buildings throughout Germany. Covering everything from windows, tracery and vaulting to altars, pulpits, metalwork and carved ornament, it became an important reference for the revival of Gothic architecture and ecclesiastical design during the Victorian period.

The Gothic Model-book; The Architecture of the Middle Ages, with its associated Arts, illustrated by examples drawn from existing authorities in the Churches and public buildings of Germany. By V. Statz and G. Ungewitter; with descriptive text by A. Reichensperger; translated by Monicke.

Published by A. Evans, The Strand, London. Undated, but believed to be 1858 first English edition. An uncommon title.

A substantial folio sized hardback which has been rebound with modern burgundy leather spine with black morocco title labels with gilt decoration. The covers bound in grey cloth and modern plain ivory endpapers with cloth strengthening to hinges. All very soundly bound.

Provenance: with ink stamps of Constantine & Co Cabinet Makers of Leeds.

Overall the book is in good (minus) condition - the introductory text pages are generally bright and clear, but the title pages and the plates have substantial foxing throughout. Everything is still legible making this an excellent reference work, but the Plates would not be suitable for display due to the spotting. Plates are mainly in monochrome, some in duotone, with a few in colour.

Imperfect, but still an attractive and impressive volume.

Text in English.

(i) Title + 22pp text + 216pp Plates.

Dimensions: approx 401mm high x 300mm wide x 55mm deep.

Weight: approximately 4.64kg (unpacked).
