Published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1853-1870.
A very good set of volumes, scarce to find complete. All first editions. The last 2 volumes in the narrative entitled History of Scotland, the Revolution to the Extinction of the Last Jacobite Insurrection (1689-1748) were actually the first to be published as a 2 Volume set in 1853, and were followed by the 7 volumes covering the earlier time period entitled The History of Scotland from Agricola's Invasion to the Revolution of 1688, published from 1867-1870.
Full leather binding with high quality decoration and raised bands to spine. 2 volumes have lost their 'History of Scotland' labels to spine. Covers are scuffed and bumped with various degrees of shelf wear, but still present as a handsome set. Volume 8 has some leather losses to edge of cover on front and rear. Some volumes have areas of staining and scratches.
The set is soundly bound throughout. Endpapers are marbled with gilt tooled edges and a small Glasgow bookseller's sticker. Text block has marbled edges throughout. Text pages are nice and clean approaching near fine. Minor age discoloration to extremities and occasional foxing. An attractive set overall.
