First published in 1925, The Medieval Village by G. G. Coulton is a classic and accessible study of everyday rural life in medieval England. Drawing on manorial records, court rolls and contemporary documents, Coulton reconstructs the social structure, customs and economic realities of the medieval peasantry, challenging romanticised notions of the Middle Ages with a characteristically robust and evidence-based approach. This 1931 third impression, issued by Cambridge University Press, reflects the continuing demand for Coulton's scholarship and remains an engaging and authoritative account of village society in the later Middle Ages.
