Stanley Jackson's The Sassoons traces the remarkable history of the wealthy and influential Sassoon family, from their origins in Baghdad and the establishment of their commercial empire in nineteenth-century India and China to their emergence as prominent figures in British society. Often described as the "Rothschilds of the East", successive generations built an international fortune through trade and banking before becoming noted philanthropists, politicians, society figures and patrons of the arts. Jackson's account encompasses some of the family's most celebrated members and provides a colourful history of a dynasty whose activities connected the commercial worlds of Asia, the Middle East and Britain.
