Venice, Augustus J.C. Hare, 1900
Venice, with Map and Twenty Three Woodcuts, by Augustus J.C. Hare.
Augustus John Cuthbert Hare (1834–1903) was one of the most popular Victorian travel writers, admired for his detailed and engaging guidebooks to Italy and other parts of Europe. In Venice he combined practical advice for visitors with historical, artistic, and literary commentary, supported by woodcut illustrations and a two-page colour map. First published in the 1880s, Hare’s Venice became a standard English-language guide for late 19th-century travellers and remains valued today for its rich evocation of the city at the height of the Grand Tour tradition.
